Our Assessment: The U.S. Springfield Model 1903 was the standard American service rifle of the early twentieth century and remained in widespread use through the Second World War. Developed at Springfield Armory and based heavily on the Mauser bolt action system, the rifle earned a reputation for strength, accuracy, and reliability. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the cartridge adopted by the U.S. military in 1906 that became one of the most successful rifle cartridges ever developed, the Model 1903 served American forces from the First World War through the early years of World War II before gradually being supplemented by the M1 Garand. Rifles marked for the United States Marine Corps are of particular interest as the Marines maintained their own armorers and rebuilding programs, often fitting new barrels and maintaining rifles well into the war years.
This example is a 1938 produced Springfield Model 1903 fitted with a barrel dated September 1942 and marked “U.S.M.C.” along with the Springfield “S” mark. The rifle retains about 97 percent of its parkerized finish with light handling wear, scattered scratches, and small areas of oxidation, including light surface rust on the buttplate. The two piece military stock with semi pistol grip and metal buttplate with trapdoor shows scattered handling marks and compression marks but remains solid with no cracks or chips, rating in Fine condition overall. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and light erosion with fouling present, rating 7 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly and the rifle represents a Marine Corps marked Springfield Model 1903 reflecting the continued service and refurbishment of these rifles during the Second World War period.
