Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The furniture set on this rifle has been heavily sanded and refinished, as a result the wood is flush to the left side of the receiver bevel. The wood still shows compressions, nicks, surface level lines and scattered chips. There are no cracks. The butt plate retains most of its finish showing rub wear around the edges and some surface rust freckling at the heel. The door spring is strong and functions correctly. Overall the stock set is in Good-Good+ condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion/pitting in the bore. There is some fouling in the grooves. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2 and a throat of 3. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains 97% of its metal finish. The edges of the cylinder lock, front sight wings, and trigger guard all show finish loss. The barrel has a small marr about 2″ back from the front sight. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show minor rub wear. The action is smooth and the markings are mostly clear. The screw heads are sharp.  Overall this rifle is in about Good+-Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: DCM certificate of Authenticity.

Our Assessment: This M1 Garand was manufactured by Springfield Armory in April 1940 and features a five-digit receiver, placing it among the earliest production blocks. Produced well before the United States entered World War II, rifles from this early serial range represent the formative period of Garand production, when manufacturing methods were still being refined and output remained relatively limited. Surviving examples from this prewar timeframe are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

At some point after February 1945 the rifle was re-barreled, a common arsenal update as rifles were refurbished for continued wartime or postwar service. Even with the later barrel, the receiver itself remains the true prize, an exceptionally early, pre-WWII example from the dawn of U.S. M1 production. Five-digit Springfields represent a highly sought-after and historically significant segment of Garand collecting, marking the transition of America’s first standard-issue semi-automatic service rifle from development into full military adoption.
