Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1895 was John Browning’s answer to the emerging era of high-pressure smokeless cartridges, departing from tubular magazines in favor of a vertical internal box magazine. Manufactured in 1904 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, this example represents one of the early production rifles chambered for proprietary Winchester cartridges. With its 24 inch barrel, Schnabel forend, and crescent steel buttplate, the rifle retains the distinctive lines that made the 1895 one of the strongest and most modern lever actions of its time.
Chambered in .35 Winchester, a powerful early twentieth-century smokeless sporting cartridge introduced specifically for the Model 1895, this rifle reflects the period when hunters were transitioning to higher velocity, flatter shooting rounds. The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling, showing very light erosion and some copper fouling, rating 6 out of 10. The rifle retains approximately 10 percent of its original blued finish, having worn to a predominantly silver patina with scratches and corrosion staining throughout. Operational wear is visible on the magazine assembly. Screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked, and markings remain clear. The two-piece walnut stocks have had finish added and show scratches, compression dents, small gouges, and minor cracks at the toe. Length of pull measures 12 3/4 inches. Overall, the wood rates in Good condition for a C&R rifle of this age.
Mechanically, the lever action functions correctly. The rifle is fitted with a beaded blade front sight and a spring leaf U-notch rear with elevator, consistent with factory configuration. As a 1904 production Model 1895 in the uncommon .35 Winchester chambering, this rifle stands as a solid example of Winchester’s early smokeless lever action era, retaining strong markings and honest age throughout.
