Our Assessment:  The Pedersoli “Billy Dixon Scout” Trapdoor rifle is a modern reproduction inspired by the historic U.S. Model 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifles and the frontier era associated with them. Manufactured in Italy by Davide Pedersoli and imported by Cimarron Firearms Company, this example commemorates Billy Dixon, the famed frontier scout known for his role in the Second Battle of Adobe Walls in 1874. The rifle follows the traditional trapdoor pattern with a forward pivoting breechblock and military style lock plate marked “US Springfield.” The metal retains approximately 98 percent of its original blued and color case finish with only minor handling marks visible, placing the rifle overall in Excellent condition.

Chambered in .45-70 Government, the classic cartridge adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873, the rifle carries a 26 inch barrel fitted with a beaded blade front sight and adjustable ladder rear sight, complemented by a tang mounted peep sight for enhanced precision. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10 and the rifle does not appear to have been fired beyond possible factory testing.

The two piece walnut stock set features checkering, a first model style pistol grip, straight comb, banded forend, cleaning rod, and crescent steel buttplate with a 13 1/4 inch length of pull. The wood shows only a few minor scratches and compression marks with no chips or cracks, rating in Very Good condition. Mechanically, the trapdoor action functions correctly. This Pedersoli Billy Dixon Scout rifle stands as a well executed modern interpretation of the classic trapdoor Springfield, blending historical styling with modern craftsmanship.
