Our Assessment: The U.S. Model 1903A3 was one of the principal American service rifles produced during the Second World War. Manufactured by Remington, the 1903A3 represented a wartime simplification of the earlier Model 1903 Springfield, incorporating stamped components and a receiver mounted aperture sight to speed production while maintaining the strength and reliability of the Mauser based bolt action system. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, a cartridge adopted by the U.S. military in 1906 that became one of the most widely used and respected rifle cartridges in American history, the 1903A3 served extensively with U.S. forces during the war and remained in military inventories for years afterward.

This 1942 Remington example has been refinished and remains in a largely military style configuration with its two piece wood stock, barrel bands, sling hardware, and metal buttplate with trapdoor. The rifle retains about 99 percent of its parkerized finish with only light storage and operational wear along with scattered light scratches and spots of oxidation. The wood stock shows only light handling marks and compression marks and remains in Very Good condition overall. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only fouling present, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The barrel markings have been removed, and the rifle includes a James River Armory manual. The action functions correctly and the rifle presents as a clean example of a refinished Remington 1903A3 from the Second World War era.
