Our Assessment: The Marlin Model 30AS represents the continuation of the company’s proven Model 336 pattern into the late 20th century, maintaining the solid top receiver and side ejection system that have long defined Marlin lever actions. Produced in 1992 at North Haven, Connecticut, this example features a 20 inch round barrel and factory camo dipped finish, giving a traditional deer rifle profile a more modern, field ready appearance. The capped forearm, semi pistol grip stock, and plastic checkered buttplate provide familiar handling characteristics, while sling swivels and an installed Williams peep sight enhance practical usability. The receiver remains drilled and tapped for both scope mounting and a receiver sight, preserving versatility in sighting options.
Chambered in .30-30 Winchester, the rifle carries one of the most enduring American sporting cartridges, introduced in 1895 and long respected for its effectiveness on deer sized game. The Micro Groove barrel reflects Marlin’s approach to rifling during this era, intended to provide smooth fouling characteristics and consistent accuracy with jacketed bullets. The bore on this example is bright and shiny with sharp rifling, showing no visible erosion and rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with only light fouling present. The action functions correctly and incorporates a cross bolt safety and serrated hammer, maintaining the straightforward manual of arms expected from the platform.
This rifle retains approximately 95 percent of its original camo dipped finish, with only light handling wear visible. There is a small spot of pitting behind the rear sight location that has penetrated the camo surface. Screw heads remain sharp, pins are unmarred, and markings are clear and legible. The wood stocks rate in Very Good condition, showing light handling wear, compression dents, and minor scratches consistent with normal use. Altogether, this is a well preserved Marlin 30AS that blends classic lever action function with a factory camouflage finish, reflecting the evolution of the traditional .30-30 sporting rifle into the modern hunting era.
