Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 is one of the most iconic American revolvers ever produced. Developed in the 1950s through collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Remington, with influential input from noted handgun experimenters such as Elmer Keith, the .44 Magnum cartridge redefined revolver performance. Built on the robust N-frame, the Model 29 became internationally famous in the 1970s through its association with the “Dirty Harry” films, cementing its reputation as “the most powerful handgun in the world” in popular culture. The 29-2 variant, produced from 1961 to 1982, is particularly desirable as it represents the classic pinned-and-recessed era configuration prior to later engineering changes.

This 1980 production 4-inch example retains approximately 98% of its original nickel finish, showing only minor handling marks and light smudges on the frame. There are carbon rings and a thin turn line on the cylinder consistent with careful use. The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling and no fouling, rating 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The revolver is fitted with attractive aftermarket walnut checkered grips bearing an S&W logo, and it also includes a Hogue rubber Monogrip; both sets remain in Fine condition with only light handling wear. The nickel finish contrasts nicely with the case colored hammer and trigger, and the markings remain crisp throughout.

Mechanically, the action functions correctly with tight lockup and minimal play. The double-action trigger pull is smooth and the single-action break is crisp. Accompanied by a non-matching blue plastic Smith & Wesson case and lock, this Model 29-2 represents a highly desirable 4-inch configuration from the height of the classic .44 Magnum era, combining power, balance, and enduring collector appeal.
