Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a base soldered to the barrel. The rear sight dovetail has been plugged. There is a Lyman receiver sight installed.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a Schnabel forend with ebony tip, straight wrist, straight comb and a steel carbine buttplate with trapdoor. The stocks have been refinished. There are light handling marks, compression dents, and scratches. The LOP measures 12 1/2? from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition for a refinish.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion. There is light fouling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its metal finish. There is handling wear, mostly at the front of the action. There are light scratches throughout. There are light spots of oxidation on the barrel. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition for C&R.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Deluxe Grade Winchester Model 1895 dates to 1907 and represents one of Winchester’s most advanced and ambitious sporting rifle designs of the early smokeless era. Designed by John M. Browning, the Model 1895 departed from the traditional tubular magazine lever action in favor of a fixed internal box magazine, allowing the safe use of higher pressure cartridges and more modern bullet designs. Deluxe Saddle Ring rifles like this example were positioned at the top of Winchester’s catalog, combining robust mechanical design with refined fit, finish, and upgraded wood intended for serious sportsmen.
Chambered in .35 Winchester, this rifle is closely associated with the Model 1895 platform, as the cartridge was introduced specifically for this action in 1903. The .35 Winchester was developed as a powerful big game cartridge, offering deep penetration and authority suitable for elk, moose, and similar North American game. The 24 inch barrel provides excellent balance and velocity, and the bore remains mostly bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, showing only light fouling and rating a strong 9 out of 10. The rear barrel sight has been removed and the dovetail plugged, with a Lyman receiver sight installed, reflecting a common and period appropriate accuracy upgrade.
Overall condition is very good for a C&R example. Approximately 75 percent of the original blued finish remains, with honest handling wear concentrated toward the front of the action, light scratches throughout, and a few small oxidation spots on the barrel. The checkered walnut stocks have been refinished but remain attractive and well executed, showing only light handling marks and compression dents, with deluxe features such as the Schnabel forend with ebony tip and steel carbine buttplate with trapdoor intact. Mechanically, the action functions correctly and smoothly, presenting this rifle as a well preserved and highly desirable example of Winchester’s premier early twentieth century sporting lever action.
