Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army Second Generation represents Colt’s celebrated revival of its most iconic revolver following a fifteen-year production hiatus. Reintroduced in 1956, the Second Generation SAAs were produced using much of the original Colt tooling and adhered closely to First Generation specifications, bringing the legendary Peacemaker back to market during a resurgence of interest fueled by Western films, television, and an expanding collector community. This 1958 example, chambered in the desirable .44 Special and featuring the popular 5 1/2″ barrel length, qualifies as C&R eligible and reflects the high standards of early Second Generation production.
This revolver retains approximately 98% of its original blued and case hardened finish, with only slight thinning at the muzzle and leading edges. The cylinder shows light carbon rings and a thin turn line, consistent with careful use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion or fouling, rating 10/10 in this writer’s opinion. The original two-piece checkered black hard rubber grips with molded rampant Colt logos remain in Fine condition, showing minimal handling wear and no chips or cracks, and are confirmed matching by the partial serial number penciled inside. All matching serial numbers are present, including on the cylinder face, and the markings remain clear. The action functions correctly with tight lockup, no perceptible play, a strong hammer spring, and a crisp trigger pull.
Overall, this is a fine and highly desirable example of a 1958 Colt Single Action Army in .44 Special, combining strong originality, matching numbers, excellent bore condition, and Colt factory documentation. With its classic configuration and included Colt Factory letter, it would make a standout addition to any Colt collection or investment-grade accumulation.
