Our Assessment: This pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade dates to 1949 and represents one of the most desirable sporting rifles produced during Winchester’s golden era. The Super Grade was Winchester’s premium offering, distinguished by upgraded wood, refined stock architecture, and enhanced finishing intended to appeal to serious sportsmen. Built on the controlled-round-feed Model 70 action, this rifle exemplifies why the platform earned its enduring reputation as “The Rifleman’s Rifle,” balancing strength, reliability, and elegant handling in a top-tier hunting arm.
Chambered in .270 Winchester, this rifle reflects one of the most influential sporting cartridges of the twentieth century. Introduced in 1925, the .270 Win became synonymous with flat trajectory, excellent accuracy, and effective performance on a wide range of North American game. The 24-inch barrel remains in strong condition, with a bright bore, sharp rifling, and no erosion, showing only light wear and rating 9 out of 10. The factory front sight remains intact, while the rear sight has been removed and the dovetail plugged, and the rifle is currently fitted with a Leupold 3–9×40 “Century Limited” scope, a later addition that aligns with the rifle’s continued use as a serious hunting arm.
Overall condition is good for a C&R Super Grade of this age. Approximately 85 percent of the original blued finish remains, with scattered scratches, handling marks, and light finish loss, including more pronounced wear at the bolt knob and a few notable scratches on the barrel. The walnut Super Grade stock shows honest field wear, with compression dents, scratches, and areas of weathered finish loss, most notably along the cheekpiece, but no cracks or structural issues. Mechanically, the action functions correctly and the safety operates as designed. This rifle stands as a well-used yet highly representative example of a postwar Winchester Model 70 Super Grade, retaining the qualities that continue to make these rifles among the most respected American sporting arms ever produced.
