Our Assessment: The R.F.I. 1A1 is India’s licensed evolution of the British L1A1 Self Loading Rifle, itself a Commonwealth adaptation of the FN FAL. Produced at Rifle Factory Ishapore in 1972, this inch pattern rifle reflects the Cold War era when 7.62 NATO battle rifles defined infantry doctrine across much of the world. The 20 inch barrel with characteristic long muzzle device, adjustable gas system, protective front sight ears, and sliding rear aperture are hallmarks of the pattern. The free swiveling sling ring forward of the gas block and inch pattern magazines reinforce its Commonwealth lineage, giving the rifle the unmistakable stance of a service arm carried through decades of military training and field use.

Chambered in 7.62 NATO, adopted in the 1950s as a standardized full power cartridge among Western allies, this example retains approximately 60 percent of its original finish with honest handling and operational wear. While the lower does not match the upper receiver, the rifle remains mechanically sound and functions correctly. The synthetic furniture shows typical service marks and measures 15 inches in length of pull, and two steel inch pattern magazines accompany the rifle. This 1972 dated Indian 1A1 stands as a tangible Cold War service rifle, representing a distinct chapter in the global story of the FAL and its Commonwealth variants.
