Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1886 Takedown dates to 1907 and represents one of the strongest and most respected large frame lever action rifles of the early smokeless era. Designed by John M. Browning, the Model 1886 was engineered to handle powerful cartridges while maintaining smooth operation and durability, and the takedown configuration added practical versatility for transport and storage. With its 24 inch round barrel, capped forend, and semi pistol grip stock, this rifle reflects a classic early twentieth century sporting configuration intended for serious field use.
Chambered in .33 WCF, this rifle is associated with one of Winchester’s early high velocity smokeless cartridges, introduced in 1902 to bridge the gap between traditional black powder rounds and more modern hunting cartridges. The .33 WCF offered improved velocity and flatter trajectory compared to earlier designs and was favored for medium to large game. The bore on this example is gray with distinct rifling, showing minor erosion and pitting consistent with age and use, and rates 7 out of 10. The Nickel Steel Barrel marking underscores Winchester’s emphasis on metallurgy suited for smokeless powder, and the presence of a Lyman tang sight reflects a period appropriate upgrade for improved precision.
Condition reflects later refinishing and long term use. The metal retains approximately 95 percent of its refinish, with light scratches, visible polish marks, and slightly softened markings from preparation prior to bluing. The walnut stocks have been refinished and show sanding marks, areas of proud wood, oil darkening near the receiver, a chipped area at the upper left tang, and some forend shrinkage resulting in looseness. Mechanically, the action functions smoothly with solid lock up, a crisp trigger, and a properly operating half cock safety. This rifle remains a mechanically sound and visually representative example of a takedown Winchester 1886 in an important early smokeless chambering.
