Our Assessment: The Browning Model 1885 Low Wall is a modern production interpretation of John M. Browning’s classic single shot falling block rifle, revived to showcase traditional design paired with contemporary manufacturing. Produced in 1996 by Miroku of Japan for Browning, this Low Wall reflects the lighter, more graceful action originally intended for small-bore and varmint cartridges. Chambered in .22 Hornet, the rifle aligns well with the Low Wall’s historical role as a precise sporting and small-game rifle rather than a heavy target arm. The octagonal barrel and clean, sightless profile emphasize the model’s classic lines within a modern sporting context.
This example is configured with a 24 inch octagonal barrel, blued finish, and a Burris scope mount fitted with a Redfield 3–9x scope, with clear glass noted. The rifle retains approximately 98 percent of its original metal finish, showing only light scratches and minimal operational wear along the barrel. The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, showing fouling and rating 8 out of 10, while the checkered walnut stocks display light handling marks without cracks or chips, overall rating Fine. The action functions correctly with a solid lock-up and crisp trigger, and the rifle includes the mounted scope.
