Our Assessment: The Colt Model of 1911 stands among the most influential military handguns ever adopted by the United States, representing the culmination of John Moses Browning’s early semi-automatic pistol development. Officially accepted by the U.S. Army in 1911 after exhaustive trials, the pistol answered the Army’s demand for greater stopping power following combat experience in the Philippines and introduced a locked-breech, recoil-operated system that would define service pistols for generations. This example, manufactured by Colt in 1913, predates U.S. entry into the First World War and reflects early Army production of the Model of 1911 during its formative service years.

This pistol retains approximately 65 percent of its metal finish, with honest service wear concentrated along the grip frame, trigger guard, and high edges where the metal has worn to the white. The slide and frame markings remain clear and legible, including the UNITED STATES PROPERTY marking and the correct MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY slide legend. Scattered light nicks, scuffs, scratches, and a visible slide stop disassembly mark are present, consistent with long military use. The replacement checkered walnut grips with gold Colt medallions show even handling wear without cracks, and the lanyard loop remains intact at the base of the grip frame.

The bore is bright with sharp rifling and minimal fouling, rating 9.5 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, though the barrel itself is a later replacement chrome-lined example marked “45 AUTO / 7791193 / 95” rather than original to the pistol. Mechanically, the action functions correctly with normal operational wear expected of an early service sidearm. Chambered in .45 ACP, the cartridge developed alongside the Model 1911 to deliver decisive close-range effectiveness, this pistol represents the pattern carried by U.S. officers and enlisted men in the years leading into the First World War. As an early Army Colt 1911 with documented service wear and a period replacement barrel, this example offers a compelling and authentic connection to the origins of America’s most iconic military handgun.
