The scope is a modified version on the Vari-X III 6.5-20, and has been modified by Dogtown to be a 14.5-35x scope. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows no notable wear. Overall, the scope rates in Excellent condition. The scope is mounted on a two-piece base, and sits in 1″ rings.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece fiberglass composite stock, that is pink in color, with white spiderweb accents. The stock features a semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, serrated rubber Pachmayr buttpad, sling studs front and rear (front sling stud is missing), and a wide beavertail forend. The LOP measures 14 1/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with a few minor dings in the stock’s finish at the right side of the wrist, and on the underside of the forend by the front sling stud hole. There are dremel marks in the channel for the bolt handle. Otherwise, the stock’s finish is largely intact. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Stainless
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling wear, with only minor superficial imperfections scattered throughout the metal surfaces. The jeweling on the bolt is vivid and bright. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The aftermarket trigger has a light, crisp, and clean break, and breaks consistently at 15 ounces. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the original factory Remington trigger, as a spare. (not currently installed).
Our Assessment: The Remington 40-XB is one of the company’s premier precision bolt-action platforms, derived from Remington’s custom shop and competition lineage. Built around a heavy-duty action with match-grade components, the 40-XB earned a reputation in benchrest and varmint circles for consistency and rigidity. This example has been further customized with a stainless 28 inch fluted “Dogtown Special” barrel, reflecting a build intended for high-velocity varmint or precision shooting applications rather than general sporting use.
Chambered in .220 Swift, the rifle is built around one of the fastest commercial cartridges ever introduced. Developed in the 1930s, the .220 Swift quickly became known for its extremely high velocity and flat trajectory, making it a long-standing favorite among varmint hunters. The extended 28 inch heavy contour barrel supports the cartridge’s velocity potential, and the modified Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x E.F.R., upgraded by Dogtown to approximately 14.5-35x magnification, underscores the rifle’s long-range and precision orientation.
This example presents in very good to fine overall condition, retaining nearly all of its stainless finish with only minor handling evidence. The bore remains bright with strong rifling, the bolt jeweling is vivid, and the fiberglass composite stock remains solid despite minor cosmetic wear and channel modification marks. The trigger currently installed breaks at a very light 15 ounces, and the original factory Remington trigger is included. Altogether, this custom 40-XB stands as a specialized precision rifle configured around one of the classic high-velocity varmint cartridges, blending Remington’s match heritage with later custom enhancements.
