Our Assessment: The Browning BLR Lightning represents one of the most successful modern reinterpretations of the lever-action rifle, blending traditional handling with contemporary engineering. Produced by Miroku in Japan for Browning, the BLR line is widely respected for its precision machining, smooth operation, and ability to handle high-pressure modern cartridges that are not compatible with traditional tubular-magazine lever guns. By 2009, Miroku’s production quality was at a peak, and these rifles had earned a strong reputation among knowledgeable shooters who wanted lever-action ergonomics without sacrificing ballistic performance.
Chambered in .22-250 Remington, this BLR Lightning occupies a particularly appealing niche. The .22-250 is a classic high-velocity varmint and predator cartridge, known for flat trajectory, excellent accuracy, and explosive terminal performance on small game at extended ranges. Pairing this cartridge with the BLR’s detachable box magazine and rotating bolt design results in a rifle that offers bolt-action-level ballistics in a fast-handling lever-action format. The 20-inch barrel strikes a practical balance between velocity and maneuverability, making this rifle equally suitable for open-country varmint work or calling predators from a blind.
Condition on this example is notably strong, with the rifle retaining the vast majority of its original finish and showing only light evidence of careful use. The gloss walnut stocks remain crisp and attractive, the action functions correctly, and the bore is excellent. The inclusion of a quality Leupold VX-I 3-9x scope further enhances the rifle’s practical appeal, providing an optic well-matched to the .22-250’s effective range. Overall, this is a clean, well-kept BLR Lightning that exemplifies Browning and Miroku’s ability to merge classic styling with modern performance.
