Our Assessment: This left-handed Weatherby Mark V Deluxe in .340 Weatherby Magnum represents one of the most desirable and least common configurations from Weatherby’s South Gate, California–marked, Japanese-made production era. Left-hand Mark V rifles are inherently scarce, and when paired with the powerful .340 Weatherby Magnum, they occupy a special niche among serious big-game and dangerous-game hunters. Introduced in the early 1960s, the .340 Weatherby Magnum was designed to deliver heavy bullet performance with flat trajectory and exceptional downrange energy, making it a favored cartridge for elk, moose, and large bears. The nine-lug Mark V action remains central to this rifle’s appeal, offering immense strength and smooth cycling under magnum pressures.
This example remains in fine overall condition, retaining approximately 98 percent of its original blued finish. The metal surfaces show only light storage and handling wear, with deep, even bluing throughout and crisp, legible markings. The 26 inch barrel features factory porting at the muzzle, a period-correct feature intended to help manage recoil and muzzle rise with this powerful chambering. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, earning a full 10 out of 10 rating and reflecting careful ownership.
The Deluxe walnut stock displays classic Weatherby styling with skip-line checkering, rosewood grip cap and forend tip, and a Monte Carlo comb with cheekpiece. The gloss finish remains intact, the wood grain is attractive, and the stock fits tightly to the action with no cracks or structural concerns. A two-piece Leupold base is installed, allowing straightforward mounting of an appropriate period or modern optic. Overall, this is a scarce left-hand Weatherby Mark V Deluxe that combines collector desirability with serious hunting capability, especially appealing to left-handed shooters seeking a classic magnum rifle from Weatherby’s golden era.
