Markings: Left side of the trunnion is marked with the factory 66 logo and “84S 407285“ The left side of the receiver is marked “5.56×45 / MADE IN CHINA / NORINCO / CSI L.A CA USA”. The left side of the dust cover is marked “7285”. Right side of the receiver is marked “S” and “F” near the safety lever. The bolt and bolt carrier are marked “7285”. The carrier spring is marked “7285”.
Barrel Length: 16.25” threaded. 17.25” with a muzzle device.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an adjustable hooded pin. The rear sight is a “U” tangent notch leaf sight marked from “1 – 8” and “D” for the battle position.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is a three piece wood set with a straight comb, vented hand guard, wooden semi pistol grip, and metal buttplate with trap door (Cleaning Kit Missing). There is little to no wear. There are light scratches and compressions in the wood. The LOP measures 12.25” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling and operational wear. There are light scratches and thinning. There is light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp and the pins are unmarred. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Norinco 84S is one of the most desirable pre-ban Chinese AK variants imported into the United States prior to the 1989 import restrictions, representing a distinct departure from the traditional 7.62×39 chambering by adopting the 5.56×45 NATO cartridge. Manufactured by Norinco at Factory 66, the 84S was purpose-built around the smaller cartridge rather than converted, resulting in proper geometry, reliable feeding, and handling characteristics unique among AK-pattern rifles. The hooded front sight, 800-meter rear tangent, and classic Chinese receiver markings firmly place this rifle within the golden era of Chinese AK imports, when fit, finish, and attention to detail were notably high.
This example presents in fine overall condition, retaining the vast majority of its original blued finish with only light handling and operational wear visible. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion noted, and the matching-marked bolt group and carrier components reinforce its factory integrity. The original wood furniture remains clean and well-preserved with only minor surface marks, and the included 30-round magazine completes the package. Overall, this pre-ban Norinco 84S stands as a highly collectible and historically significant AK-pattern rifle, combining Chinese manufacturing quality with a scarce NATO-caliber configuration that continues to command strong interest among serious AK collectors.
