Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1895 takedown rifle, manufactured by Miroku in 2005 for U.S. Repeating Arms Company, is a modern revival of one of John Browning’s most distinctive lever action designs. The original Model 1895 was Winchester’s first lever action to utilize an internal box magazine, allowing it to safely chamber pointed bullets and high-velocity smokeless cartridges, setting it apart from traditional tube-fed lever guns. Chambered here in .405 Winchester Center Fire, the configuration famously associated with early 20th century big-game hunting, this reproduction captures the mechanical intent and visual authority of the original while benefiting from modern metallurgy and precision manufacturing associated with Winchester Repeating Arms.
The 24 inch barrel is properly marked “Especially for Smokeless Powder” and retains a bright bore with sharp rifling and no erosion, earning a full 10 out of 10 bore rating. Approximately 99 percent of the original blued finish remains, with no notable operational wear observed. Screw heads are sharp, markings are crisp and fully legible, and the metal surfaces present in an Excellent, near–like new condition. The takedown configuration is cleanly executed, reinforcing the rifle’s blend of practical design and high-quality fit and finish.
The two-piece checkered walnut stocks feature a schnabel forend, straight grip, straight comb, and steel buttplate, all consistent with classic Winchester styling. The checkering remains sharp, with no chips or cracks present, and only scattered rack marks and minor nicks visible, placing the stocks solidly in the Very Good to Excellent range. Mechanically, the action functions correctly and smoothly, with a rebounding hammer, tang safety, and crisp trigger pull. Accompanied by its factory box and owner’s manual, this Model 1895 takedown stands as a high-condition example of Winchester’s modern Miroku-built reproductions, combining historical significance, powerful chambering, and exceptional overall preservation.
