Our Assessment: The Ruger Model 44 Deerfield Carbine represents Ruger’s modernized continuation of its classic semi-automatic .44 Magnum sporting rifle concept, originally introduced in the early 1960s with the tubular-magazine Model 44. The Deerfield variant, produced from 2000 to 2006, incorporated a revised gas system and a detachable rotary magazine derived from the Mini-14 design, improving reliability and handling while maintaining the compact, woods-rifle character that made the original so successful. This 2001 example reflects Ruger’s late-20th-century approach to blending traditional sporting aesthetics with updated mechanical design.
Chambered in .44 Remington Magnum, the Deerfield Carbine is purpose-built for short- to mid-range hunting and general utility, offering substantial terminal performance in a compact, fast-handling package. Introduced in 1955, the .44 Magnum quickly became one of the most versatile American cartridges, transitioning successfully from revolvers into carbines where velocity and energy are notably increased. With its 18.5-inch barrel, this rifle maximizes the cartridge’s efficiency while remaining maneuverable in dense cover. The bore on this example is bright with sharp rifling, shows no erosion, and rates 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion.
This rifle retains approximately 97% of its original blued finish, with only light operational wear, minor scratches, and scattered corrosion freckling consistent with careful use. The smooth wood stock remains solid and well fitted, showing only light handling marks and no structural issues, rating in Very Good condition overall. Markings are clear and legible, screw heads are sharp, and the action and cross-bolt safety function correctly. Overall, this Deerfield Carbine is a clean, well-preserved example of Sturm, Ruger & Co.’s modern take on the classic American .44 Magnum semi-automatic rifle.
