Our Assessment: The Remington Model 700 Classic in .264 Winchester Magnum represents a particularly desirable pairing of rifle and cartridge, produced during a period when Remington was deliberately revisiting historically significant chamberings in the Classic series. Introduced originally in 1959, the .264 Winchester Magnum was conceived as a high-velocity, flat-shooting cartridge intended to rival the emerging magnums of the era, and by the mid-1980s it had earned a reputation for long-range performance and excellent accuracy. This 1986 example reflects Remington’s continued commitment to traditional sporting rifles with classic lines and proven engineering.
This rifle presents in very strong overall condition, retaining approximately 99 percent of its original blued finish. The metal surfaces are deep and even, with crisp markings and bright, well-preserved bolt jeweling. The walnut stock is excellent, showing no notable wear beyond light storage dust, with sharp checkering, intact finish, and tight fit to the action. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, though there is a localized area of light corrosion and pitting about halfway down the bore, resulting in an 8 out of 10 bore rating. This condition has been fully accounted for in the overall evaluation and is clearly reflected in the description.
Mechanically, the rifle functions correctly, with a smooth bolt throw, properly operating safety, and a trigger that breaks cleanly and crisply. As part of the Remington Classic series, this rifle offers both historical context and practical appeal, standing as a well-preserved example of Remington craftsmanship during the 1980s. With its strong condition, desirable chambering, and classic configuration, this Model 700 Classic remains an attractive and representative example of the series.
