Barrel Length: 22” light profile National Match barrel. Approximate 25” with the classic flash hider.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable hooded aperture sight set between two protective wings. National match sight set.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is the traditional M1A style Walnut stock with two sling swivels, semi pistol grip, straight comb, a 13.25 LOP, butt storage compartment and the hinged metal butt plate. This rifle includes the cleaning kit in the butt. The wood shows no chips or cracks. The forend has some minor marks from the front sling ring. The upper handguard shows a few minor marks. Overall the stock set is in Very Good+-Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore. The feed ramps are smooth and shiny. The muzzle device shows no carbon build up or Verdigris. This rifle has been fired very little. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains 98% of its metal finish. The finish shows some minor surface level lines and marks. The friction surfaces of the bolt and action show only very minor rub wear. The markings are mostly clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in about Excellent+ condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the cleaning kit and a 20 round box magazine in Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1A was manufactured in 1987 and sold as a “Tyro” Package National Match rifle, an entry-level competition configuration offered during the mid-1980s. The Tyro package, “tyro” meaning beginner or novice and commonly used in match circles for a first-time competitor, was clearly intended to introduce new shooters to formal competition. It features a 22″ National Match marked, lightweight-profile barrel, National Match sights including a hooded rear aperture, and a classic walnut stock, combining match-grade capability with traditional M1A styling.
As an early factory-configured match rifle, this example represents Springfield Armory’s effort to make organized competition more accessible while still delivering genuine National Match features. The walnut stock and NM sighting system provide the proper foundation for competition, making this an appealing period-correct setup.
