Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1886 stands among the great American lever actions, originally engineered by John M. Browning to handle the heavy black powder cartridges of the late nineteenth century. This modern production example, manufactured in 2025 by Miroku under license for Winchester, reflects the continued reverence for that historic design. Marked with both the New Haven address and Miroku’s Japan manufacture stamp, this Short Rifle configuration pairs a 24 inch round barrel with classic lines and traditional appointments. The straight grip stock, capped forend, and crescent steel buttplate preserve the unmistakable silhouette that made the 1886 a dominant force on the frontier and in the big timber.
Chambered in .45-90 WCF and properly marked “Black Powder Only,” this rifle is built around one of the powerful cartridges that defined the buffalo era. The .45-90, introduced in the 1870s, offered increased powder capacity over the .45-70 and was favored for its extended range and authority on large game. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, showing only light fouling, and rates 9.5 out of 10. The rifle retains approximately 98 percent of its original blue finish with only minor handling marks. The walnut stocks are smooth and well fitted, showing light wear but no chips or cracks, and rate in Excellent condition. Markings are clear and screw heads remain sharp.
Mechanically, the action functions correctly with tight lever lock-up and a crisp trigger pull, reflecting the robust vertical locking lug system that made the 1886 suitable for heavy cartridges. The tubular magazine feeds from beneath the barrel, and the rifle is equipped with a beaded blade front sight and semi-buckhorn rear with elevator, while the receiver is drilled and tapped for a receiver sight if desired. This modern Miroku-built Model 1886 captures the strength and elegance of Browning’s original design in a finely finished contemporary rifle.
