Stock Configuration & Condition:  The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment.  The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The stock has been lightly sanded and refinished. The wood shows compressions, scratches and surface level lines scattered throughout. There are no cracks. There are several scattered small chips missing mainly from the edges of the pommel and heel. The metal butt plate has lost some of its finish around the edges and shows rust forming on the edges and in the checkering. The checkering is mostly sharp and the door spring is strong. The inside of the door shows some surface rust. Overall the stock is in Very Good-Very Good+ condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to the parts. The rear sight assembly has had parts replaced.

Bore Condition: The bore is very bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no pitting or erosion. Our gauges show a muzzle of 1+ and a throat of 1+-2. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show minor rub wear and the majority of the finish loss on this rifle. The finish of the trigger group and receiver have turned slightly green with age. The barrel and gas cylinder are very clean. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in Very Good+-Excellent condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a Springfield Armory Geneseo leather sling, CMP certificate of authenticity, manuals, and receipt.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand is chambered in .30-06 and was manufactured between 1952 and 1954, placing it squarely in Korean War production. It is fitted with a Marlin Firearms Company barrel dated March 1953, which aligns perfectly with U.S. efforts to expand and maintain rifle production during the Korean conflict. Rifles from this period reflect continued refinement of the Garand platform for Cold War service rather than earlier WWII manufacture.

This rifle was sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program in 1998 as a Select Grade, a classification that emphasized excellent mechanical condition and strong barrels, roughly equivalent to what the CMP later redefined as today’s Expert Grade. Marlin barrels are particularly rare, as Marlin received a contract in January 1951 to produce approximately 50,000 M1 barrels in support of Korean War needs, with most dated 1953. As noted by Scott Duff, surviving examples are uncommon, making this rifle a desirable and historically significant Korean War era Garand.
