Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The left side of the receiver has been drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope base. There is a one piece Leupold scope base installed.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece hand-checkered walnut with a semi-pistol grip, monte-carlo comb, Pachmayr recoil pad, and sling swivels front and rear. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The stock has been refinished. The front sling stud has been relocated and the original hole repaired. There are scattered handling marks, scratches, and compression dents throughout. Overall, the stock is in Fine- Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. There is light fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The action shows light operational wear. The bluing on the barrel is clean and dark. The floorplate and trigger guard show the most notable wear. The bolt handle also shows wear from use. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition for a refinish.
Mechanics: The action functions incorrectly. The safety will not move. Other than that the rifle appears to function. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This pre-64 Winchester Model 70 dates to 1960 and represents one of the final years of production for Winchester’s most respected controlled-round-feed bolt action before the 1964 design changes. Often referred to as “The Rifleman’s Rifle,” the Model 70 earned its reputation through robust construction, excellent ergonomics, and reliable controlled feed operation. This example has been reconfigured as a high-performance sporting rifle, with a replaced 26 inch barrel and a chambering that reflects mid-century experimentation with flat-shooting, long-range hunting cartridges.
Chambered in .25-06 Remington, this rifle reflects a cartridge that originated as a popular wildcat before later gaining widespread acceptance for its combination of velocity, accuracy, and mild recoil. The long 26 inch barrel complements the cartridge well, and the bore remains outstanding, bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating an excellent 9.5 out of 10 with only light fouling present. The absence of iron sights and the installation of a one-piece Leupold scope base are consistent with the rifle’s intended use as a scoped, precision-oriented hunting rifle rather than a traditional open-sight configuration.
Overall condition is very good for a refinished example. Approximately 95 percent of the metal finish remains, with clean, dark bluing on the barrel and light operational wear visible on the action, bolt handle, and bottom metal. The walnut stock has been refinished and presents very well, showing only scattered handling marks and compression dents, with a repaired sling stud relocation executed cleanly. Markings remain clear and screw heads are sharp. Of note, the safety is currently inoperative and will not move, which is an important consideration for inspection or correction prior to use. Despite this, the rifle presents as a well-executed, high-condition custom-configured pre-64 Model 70 that reflects the evolution of American sporting rifles at the close of Winchester’s classic era.
