Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless reflects the revival of controlled round feed production in New Haven during the 1994 to 2005 era. Restoring the claw extractor and fixed blade ejector that defined the pre-64 rifles, the Classic line reaffirmed the Model 70’s standing as “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” This stainless steel configuration with a 26 inch barrel is purpose-built for magnum performance, pairing corrosion resistance with the strength of the long action receiver. Barrel and receiver markings remain crisp, including the Winchester proof and Classic Stainless designation.
Chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum, introduced in 1963 and long regarded as one of the most versatile belted magnum cartridges, this rifle is configured for extended range and substantial energy on large game. The 26 inch barrel maximizes velocity potential from the .300 Win. Mag. case, enhancing its flat trajectory and retained energy. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, appearing unfired beyond factory test fire and rating 10 out of 10. The rifle retains approximately 98 percent of its original stainless finish with only minor handling marks, and the screw heads remain sharp. The one-piece checkered synthetic stock features a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, black rubber buttpad, and sling studs front and rear, with a 13 1/2 inch length of pull. The stock rates in Excellent condition.
Mechanically, the bolt action cycles correctly and the safety operates as intended. The receiver is drilled and tapped for optic mounting, providing a solid platform for a scope suited to magnum performance. With its controlled round feed action, 26 inch barrel, and powerful .300 Winchester Magnum chambering, this Model 70 Classic Stainless stands as a clean and well-preserved example of a modern New Haven-built magnum hunting rifle.
