Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN. CONN.U.S.A.PATENTED OCTOBER 14.1884.”. 44 WCF.”. The top of the barrel and chamber ring are marked with Winchester WP proofs. The top tang is marked “MODEL 1892 / -WINCHESTER- / TRADE MARK”. The bottom of the receiver is marked “365545”.
Barrel Length: 24″ Round
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed and screw set to the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch elevator semi-buckhorn sight dovetailed to the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two piece smooth walnut, straight grip, straight comb, with a rifle style crescent steel buttplate. The LOP is 13″ from trigger to back of the buttplate. There are scratches, handling marks and compression dents throughout. There are notable dents on the right side of both the forend and buttstock. There is a crack at the upper tang. There is oil darkening by the receiver. Overall these stocks are in Good condition for a C&R of this age.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray with defined rifling. There is modest erosion and pitting throughout the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 25% of its original finish. The barrel has worn to a brown patina. There are scattered scratches and dings on the rifle. The receiver has corrosion staining throughout and has worn to a brown patina. The screw heads range from sharp to heavily tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Good condition for a C&R of this age.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1892 Rifle dates to 1906 and represents a classic small frame sporting rifle from the height of Winchester’s early twentieth century production. Designed by John M. Browning, the Model 1892 was engineered for pistol length cartridges and is widely regarded for its smooth cycling, compact action, and excellent balance. The 24 inch round barrel configuration offered a traditional rifle profile that appealed to hunters and rural shooters who valued steady handling and practical accuracy.
Chambered in .44-40 W.C.F., this rifle reflects one of the most iconic cartridges of the black powder era that successfully carried into the smokeless powder period. The .44-40 was favored for its versatility, manageable recoil, and effectiveness on small to medium game, and it remained popular due to its compatibility with revolvers of the same chambering. The bore on this example is gray with defined rifling, showing modest erosion and pitting consistent with age and use, and it rates 7 out of 10. Winchester proof marks on the barrel and chamber ring remain visible and correct for the period.
Overall condition is good for a C&R example of this age. Approximately 25 percent of the original blued finish remains, with the barrel and receiver largely transitioned to a brown patina accompanied by scattered scratches, dings, and corrosion staining. The walnut stocks show handling wear, compression dents, oil darkening near the receiver, and a crack at the upper tang, but they retain correct form and remain serviceable. Mechanically, the action functions correctly with a crisp trigger and proper half cock safety, presenting this rifle as a well used but historically representative Winchester Model 1892 in the classic .44-40 chambering.
