Our Assessment: Designed by John M. Browning and introduced in 1903, the Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless became one of the most successful and enduring early American semi-automatic pistols. Despite the “Hammerless” designation, the pistol does in fact utilize an internal hammer concealed beneath the rear of the slide, allowing for smooth, snag-free pocket carry. Chambered in .32 ACP (7.65mm), these pistols were widely favored by civilians, law enforcement officers, and later U.S. military general officers. Production spanned from 1903 to 1945, with this example manufactured in 1931, placing it solidly in the desirable pre-war commercial production era.
This pistol retains approximately 90% of its original blued finish, with honest thinning on the leading edges, slide serrations, and muzzle consistent with careful carry and handling. The markings are crisp and well-defined, including the Colt Hartford address and patent dates, along with the Rampant Colt logo. The “VP” triangle proof remains visible on the trigger guard. The two-piece checkered walnut grips with silver Colt medallions are in Very Good condition, showing mild checkering wear and a few scattered nicks but no cracks or chips. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling present, rating an excellent 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion.
Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the grip safety operates as intended. The pistol includes four blued 8-round .32 Colt magazines in Very Good condition along with a leather zippered case, enhancing its collector and shooter appeal. Overall, this 1931 Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless rates in Very Good condition and represents a classic example of Browning’s streamlined early semi-automatic design—an elegant and historically significant sidearm with lasting popularity among collectors today.
