Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “404”. The right side of the barrel is marked “Sherman” The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number and “Ceskoslovenska Zbrojovka A.S. BRNO, VZ24”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a banded blade. The rear sight is a 3 leaf folding express sight. The receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one piece laminate, capped forend, capped pistol grip, straight comb, raised cheekpiece, and rubber recoil pad. The LOP is 12 3/4″ from trigger to recoil pad. There are sling mounts, one on the buttstock and one on the barrel. There is handling wear, scratches, and light compression dents throughout. There are plugged repairs from old sling studs. Overall this stock is in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. There is stubborn fouling concentrated on the lands. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. There is light handling and operational wear. There are a few small scuffs. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a crisp and clean break. This rifle has a controlled round feed action. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This custom rifle is built on the robust CZ VZ24 Mauser action, a pattern long respected for strength, controlled round feed reliability, and adaptability to high intensity sporting conversions. Manufactured by Ceskoslovenská Zbrojovka in Brno between the interwar and World War II period, the VZ24 action became a favored foundation for custom sporting rifles, particularly for larger bore and dangerous game style builds. In this configuration, the action has been adapted to the 416/404 wildcat, a cartridge lineage rooted in the classic .404 Jeffery case geometry, reflecting a tradition of bespoke gunsmithing that prioritizes controlled feeding and dependable extraction from Ceskoslovenská Zbrojovka.
The 22 1/2 inch barrel is marked for “404” and “Sherman,” with bore dimensions measuring .416 and a bolt face of approximately .545, consistent with a .404 based wildcat conversion. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, though stubborn fouling is noted along the lands, resulting in a strong 9 out of 10 bore rating. Approximately 95 percent of the original metal finish remains, with only light handling and operational wear present. Markings are clear and legible, screw heads remain sharp, and the rifle presents as a well executed custom build that has been carefully maintained.
