Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1892 dates to 1922 and represents one of the finest small frame lever action designs ever produced by Winchester. Designed by John M. Browning, the Model 1892 is widely regarded for its smooth action, compact proportions, and exceptional balance, particularly when paired with longer octagon barrels such as this 24 inch configuration. By the early 1920s, the Model 92 had firmly established itself as a premier sporting rifle for small game and light varmint use, combining durability with refined handling characteristics.

Chambered in .25-20 Winchester, this rifle reflects a cartridge introduced in the 1890s that became synonymous with accuracy, mild recoil, and efficiency. The .25-20 was especially favored by farmers, trappers, and small game hunters for its ability to humanely take game without excessive meat damage. The bore on this example is dark with clearly defined rifling, showing moderate erosion and pitting concentrated in the grooves, rating 6 out of 10. The rifle is equipped with a Lyman tang peep sight and a factory mounted Winchester scope, an uncommon and desirable factory configuration that reflects Winchester’s early embrace of optical sights, though optic function has not been verified.

Overall condition is good for a C&R example, retaining approximately 60 percent of its metal finish. The barrel shows bluing wear along the edges, while the receiver has transitioned to a brown patina with corrosion staining consistent with age and use. The walnut stocks show scattered handling marks and a crack at the left wrist above the lever, but remain largely intact and correctly configured with a capped forend and crescent buttplate. Markings remain clear and legible, and the action functions properly with a crisp trigger and correct half cock safety. This rifle presents as a well used but historically compelling Model 1892, offering an appealing combination of early scope equipment, classic octagon barrel profile, and one of Winchester’s most enduring sporting cartridges.
