Our Assessment: The Winchester Pre 64 Model 70 is widely regarded as one of the finest American sporting bolt actions ever produced, and this 1942 Standard Rifle dates to the closing years of pre war commercial manufacture before wartime production shifts took hold. Serial number 47428 falls squarely within early production, when the controlled round feed claw extractor, coned breech, and forged receiver defined the “Rifleman’s Rifle” reputation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield with a 24 inch barrel, this rifle reflects the cartridge that had already proven itself in military service and quickly became America’s benchmark big game round. The bolt is correctly serial numbered to the receiver, preserving an important detail for collectors of Pre 64 examples.
This rifle retains approximately 95 percent of its metal finish, showing light handling marks with some softening of edges and stampings from prior polish. The markings remain clear, and the screw heads, while tool marked, retain strong and serviceable slots. The rear barrel sight has been removed and the dovetail neatly plugged. The receiver is drilled and tapped, with a receiver sight installed, and the rifle includes Buehler mount and rings along with Weaver bases. The one piece checkered walnut stock with pistol grip, fluted straight comb, checkered steel buttplate, and sling swivels has been refinished. It shows scratches and compression dents consistent with use but no chips or cracks, rating Very Good overall as refinished. Length of pull measures 13 5/8 inches.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action and manual safety function correctly. The safety and bolt shroud were changed to accommodate scope use, and the original components are included. In .30-06 Springfield, adopted by the U.S. military in 1906 and long regarded for balanced power and reach, the Model 70 became a trusted companion in hunting camps across North America. This 1942 Pre 64 example retains its essential character and matching bolt, representing a classic era of Winchester craftsmanship.
