Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows no handling or operation wear. There is a barely perceptible turn line between some of the cylinder stops. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The Colt Cowboy was manufactured with a transfer bar system which allows for the carry of six rounds safely. It also doesn’t have the typical 4-click hammer. Lockup produces barely perceptible side to side play. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: The Colt Cowboy represents Colt’s late twentieth century effort to reenter the growing Cowboy Action Shooting market while preserving the outward character of the classic Single Action Army. Introduced in 1999, the Cowboy was designed to capture the look, balance, and handling of the “Peacemaker” while offering a more affordable alternative to the traditional SAA with a price point closer to that of the Italian clones. Production ceased in 2003 for the Colt Cowboy, making it a brief chapter in Colt firearms history. From arm’s length, the profile is unmistakably Colt, carrying forward the familiar lines that have defined the Single Action Army since the nineteenth century.
Unlike the traditional SAA, the Colt Cowboy incorporates an investment-cast steel frame and a transfer bar safety system, allowing it to be safely carried with all six chambers loaded. This system replaces the four-click hammer of the Peacemaker with a three-click sequence, while retaining the half-cock loading position and overall manual of arms familiar to single-action shooters. Chambered in .45 Colt with a 5 1/2 inch barrel, this revolver remains closely tied to the cartridge and configuration most closely associated with the Colt single-action tradition.
Condition is excellent, with approximately 98 percent of the original blue and case-colored finish retained, sharp screw heads, clear markings, and only a faint cylinder turn line visible. The bore is bright with crisp rifling, and the revolver presents as a lightly used example that has seen careful handling. Overall, this Colt Cowboy stands as an interesting chapter in Colt’s modern history, blending classic “Peacemaker” aesthetics with contemporary manufacturing choices while remaining unmistakably Colt in appearance and feel.
