Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless represents the New Haven era return to controlled round feed production between 1994 and 2005. Restoring the claw extractor and fixed blade ejector that defined the pre-64 rifles, the Classic line reaffirmed the Model 70’s long-standing reputation for strength and reliability. This stainless steel configuration with a 26 inch barrel is purpose-built for magnum cartridges, combining corrosion resistance with the robust long action receiver. Barrel markings, Winchester trade mark roll marks, and the circled WP proof remain clear and properly applied.
Chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum, introduced in 1962 and widely respected for its flat trajectory and strong long-range performance, this rifle is configured for extended distance hunting applications. The 26 inch barrel allows the cartridge to reach optimal velocity potential. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, appearing unfired beyond factory test fire and rating 10 out of 10. The rifle retains approximately 98 percent of its original stainless finish with only minor handling marks and a small rack mark on the top of the barrel from storage. Screw heads remain sharp. The one-piece checkered synthetic stock features a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, black rubber buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. Length of pull measures 13 1/2 inches. The stock rates in Excellent condition.
Mechanically, the bolt cycles correctly and the safety functions as intended. The receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounting, providing a solid platform for optics suited to the 7mm Remington Magnum’s effective range. With its controlled round feed action, 26 inch stainless barrel, and strong magnum chambering, this Model 70 Classic Stainless stands as a clean and well-preserved example of a late New Haven production hunting rifle.
