Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 64 dates to 1946, placing it firmly in the immediate postwar period when Winchester resumed civilian sporting rifle production after World War II. The Model 64 was conceived as a more refined sporting evolution of the Model 1894, offering improved ergonomics and a sleeker profile while retaining the proven top ejecting lever action that had defined Winchester’s reputation for decades. The semi beavertail forend, capped pistol grip, and shotgun style buttplate reflect Winchester’s effort to modernize the classic lever rifle for mid twentieth century hunters returning to the field.

Chambered in .30-30 Winchester, this rifle is representative of one of the most successful sporting cartridges ever produced. Introduced in 1895, the .30-30 became synonymous with North American deer hunting due to its balance of manageable recoil, practical accuracy, and effective terminal performance. The 24 inch barrel on this example remains in strong condition, with a bright bore, sharp rifling, and no visible erosion, rating 9 out of 10. Factory Winchester Proof Steel markings and WP proofs are clear, reinforcing the rifle’s originality and correct configuration.

Overall condition is consistent with honest field use, retaining approximately 75 percent of the original blued finish with scattered wear, light corrosion, and handling marks throughout. The walnut stocks show expected use, including compression dents, a notable forend gouge, and a small crack at the rear of the forend, while remaining solid and correctly fitted. The checkered steel buttplate shows wear and light corrosion near the heel, adding to the rifle’s well traveled character. Mechanically, the action functions smoothly with a crisp trigger and properly operating safeties, presenting this Model 64 as a sound and historically representative postwar Winchester sporting rifle.
