Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V Sporter is one of the defining examples of Roy Weatherby’s vision for high-velocity, flat-shooting sporting rifles, and this .257 Weatherby Magnum configuration captures that philosophy perfectly. Built around the famed Mark V action with its distinctive multi-lug bolt and strong receiver design, this rifle reflects Weatherby’s long-standing emphasis on strength, smooth operation, and magnum performance. The .257 Weatherby Magnum, introduced in the mid-20th century, became legendary for its blistering velocity, flat trajectory, and effectiveness on open-country game, making it a perennial favorite among Western hunters.
This example presents in Fine overall condition, retaining approximately 98 percent of its original blued metal finish. The barrel shows only minor thinning at the muzzle, while the remainder of the bluing remains deep and even. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, showing only light fouling and no erosion, consistent with careful use. The walnut stock displays attractive figure and crisp checkering, with only minor handling marks and compressions, and fits tightly to the action with no issues. The classic Weatherby Monte Carlo comb and vented buttpad complete the rifle’s iconic profile.
Overall, this Mark V Sporter represents a well-preserved example of a classic American magnum hunting rifle, combining Weatherby’s signature styling with one of its most celebrated cartridges. Its strong condition, excellent bore, and traditional configuration make it an appealing choice for collectors of Weatherby rifles as well as hunters seeking a proven long-range performer.
