Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V Deluxe represents the classic expression of Roy Weatherby’s vision for a high-performance sporting rifle paired with distinctive California-era styling. Produced during the Japanese Miroku period for Weatherby’s South Gate, California address, these rifles are widely respected for their exceptional machining quality, smooth nine-lug Mark V action, and deep, lustrous blued finish. Chambered in .270 Weatherby Magnum, this rifle reflects Weatherby’s original philosophy of flat-shooting velocity and long-range hunting capability, a cartridge that helped define the brand’s reputation in the post-war sporting market.
This example remains mechanically sound and visually appealing, with approximately 98 percent of its original metal finish intact. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, earning a 10/10 rating. The bluing remains deep and even across the barrel and receiver, with only light scratches, minor handling marks, and slight thinning at the muzzle consistent with careful field use. The skip-line checkered walnut stock displays attractive grain and correct Deluxe configuration, though the gloss finish shows age-related cracking and flaking typical of Weatherby stocks from this era. Importantly, these cosmetic issues do not affect the structural integrity of the stock, which remains tight to the action with no structurally compromising chips or cracks.
Topping the rifle is a period-correct Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x scope with clear glass and only light cosmetic wear, mounted in engraved rings that complement the Deluxe aesthetic. As a complete package, this rifle offers strong appeal to collectors of Japanese-made Weatherby Mark V rifles while remaining a practical and capable hunting arm. It embodies the balance of craftsmanship, performance, and classic Weatherby styling that continues to draw interest decades after its production.
