Our Assessment: This engraved Colt Government Model commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Michigan State Police and represents one of the more distinctive law enforcement themed Colt commemoratives of the 1970s. Produced in 1977 and limited to 1,608 examples, this pistol celebrates the evolution of the Michigan State Police from its founding in 1917 through six decades of service. Built on the classic Colt 1911 platform, the commemorative pairs one of America’s most influential service pistols with a state agency whose history closely parallels the professionalization of modern policing in the United States.
What sets this example apart is its fully engraved slide, which features detailed scrollwork alongside period imagery including a mounted trooper, police motorcycle, patrol car, and helicopter, visually tracing the progression of MSP transportation and tactics over time. The engraving is sharp and well executed, with strong definition throughout, and the matte blued finish remains virtually intact at approximately 99 percent. The walnut grips with gold Colt medallions show minimal handling wear and present in Excellent condition, consistent with long term display in the original felt lined presentation case bearing the Michigan State Police 60th Anniversary brass plaque.
The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the pistol functions correctly with a crisp trigger pull and only the lightest signs of operational wear. As a documented, limited production Colt commemorative tied to a specific state police agency, this example carries both collector appeal and historical context beyond standard commercial Government Models of the era. Although made in 1977 (less than 50 years) it is listed on the official C&R list of commemorative guns from the ATF and qualifies as a C&R. Its originality, condition, and complete presentation make it a standout among Colt law enforcement commemoratives of the 1970s.
