Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 70 Coyote reflects Winchester’s early-2000s effort to modernize the legendary Model 70 platform for high-velocity varmint and predator hunting. Produced during the 2004 to 2006 period at the New Haven plant, the Coyote variant combined the classic Model 70 action with contemporary materials and chamberings intended to push performance boundaries. Even in this modern configuration, the rifle retains the core Model 70 identity that made it one of the most respected sporting bolt actions of the 20th century, reinforcing the continued relevance of the design well into the 21st century under the stewardship of Winchester Repeating Arms.
Chambered in .223 Winchester Super Short Magnum, this rifle represents Winchester’s ambitious WSSM program, which sought magnum-level velocities from a compact, efficient cartridge. The .223 WSSM delivers exceptionally flat trajectories and high velocities, making it well suited for long-range varmint and predator applications. The 24-inch medium-heavy stainless barrel supports sustained accuracy and heat management, while the lack of iron sights and factory drilling and tapping reflect the rifle’s purpose-built role as a scoped precision hunting platform. The laminate stock with semi-beavertail forend further emphasizes stability and modern ergonomics over traditional lines.
Condition on this example is outstanding. The rifle retains approximately 98 percent of its original metal finish, with no notable damage and crisp, legible markings throughout. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, shows no erosion, and appears unfired beyond factory testing, earning a full 10 out of 10 rating in this writer’s opinion. The laminate stock shows no wear and rates Excellent overall, and the screw heads remain sharp and undisturbed. Accompanied by its original box and paperwork, this Model 70 Coyote stands as a near-new example of Winchester’s modern varmint rifle development during the New Haven era.
