Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb with shadow-line cheekpiece, black rubber buttpad, a black tipped forend, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with a few scratches, dings, and compressions scattered throughout. The checkering remains well defined. The stock’s finish is intact throughout, and the wood grain is tight, and contrasts well with the blued metal. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with a few light scratches and dings scattered throughout the metal surfaces. There is some minor freckling of surface corrosion on the front of the bolt body, and there is some unknown residue on the top of the receiver where the scope mounts go. Otherwise, the bluing is deep and dark throughout. The jeweling on the bolt and magazine follower is bright and vivid. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are lightly tooled, but retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Super Grade represents the culmination of Winchester’s post–pre-64 revival, blending traditional Super Grade refinement with the controlled round feed “Classic” action that restored the Model 70’s reputation among serious hunters. Chambered in .338 Winchester Magnum, this configuration was purpose-built for demanding big game pursuits, where deep penetration, reliable feeding, and decisive terminal performance matter most. The 22-inch barrel strikes a practical balance between velocity and handling, making this rifle well suited for mountainous terrain and timbered country alike.

The .338 Winchester Magnum, introduced in 1958, quickly earned its place as one of North America’s premier heavy-game cartridges. In a Model 70 Super Grade, it offers authoritative performance on elk, moose, and bear while maintaining manageable recoil characteristics for experienced shooters. The Classic action’s full-length extractor and controlled feeding system are particularly appreciated in magnum chamberings, reinforcing the rifle’s reputation for reliability under adverse conditions. The Super Grade marked floorplate, jeweled bolt, and carefully fitted walnut stock reflect Winchester’s continued emphasis on craftsmanship during this era.

This early-2000s Super Grade remains an excellent example of Winchester’s New Haven production, appealing equally to hunters seeking a serious field rifle and collectors drawn to the Super Grade lineage. Its restrained wear and strong original finish underscore a rifle that has been well cared for, retaining both its functional integrity and aesthetic presence.
