Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1866 Short Rifle is a modern Miroku produced interpretation of one of the most recognizable lever action designs of the nineteenth century. The original 1866 earned the nickname “Yellow Boy” for its brass frame and became an important transitional rifle in American firearms history, bridging the gap between early rimfire Henry rifles and later centerfire Winchester models. This 2018 production example captures the classic visual character well, pairing polished brass with blued steel and a compact short rifle profile that emphasizes balance and traditional handling.

Chambered in .38 Special, the rifle reflects a cartridge long valued for its mild recoil and efficient performance in lever action platforms. The round barrel is paired with a beaded front sight and a folding carbine style ladder rear sight, offering a period correct sighting arrangement that complements the rifle’s historic aesthetic. The two piece walnut stocks feature a capped forend, straight grip, straight comb, and a rifle style brass buttplate with flip up door, reinforcing the authentic appearance while maintaining clean lines and excellent overall presentation.

Overall condition remains excellent, with approximately 99 percent of the original finish present and only minor handling marks visible. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and shows no erosion, appearing unfired beyond factory test firing. Mechanical condition is noted as non functional, with the firing pin rusted in place and uncertainty regarding a possible bolt change, and the rifle is not recommended for firing in its current state. The hammer does retain a half cock safety position. Included box and paperwork add completeness. As presented, this Model 1866 Short Rifle remains a visually striking modern reproduction from Winchester that emphasizes historical style and display appeal.
