Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V manufactured in West Germany by J.P. Sauer & Sohn represents one of the most respected periods in Weatherby production, widely regarded for exceptional machining, deep bluing, and refined stock work. By 1972, the Mark V had firmly established its reputation as a premium sporting rifle, built around Roy Weatherby’s signature nine-lug bolt design intended to handle high velocity magnum cartridges with strength and smooth operation. German-made Mark V rifles from this era remain especially desirable due to their craftsmanship and traditional fit and finish.

Chambered in .270 Weatherby Magnum, this rifle reflects one of Weatherby’s hallmark cartridges, developed to deliver flat trajectory and long-range performance while maintaining manageable recoil. The 24 inch barrel fully supports the cartridge’s high velocity design, and the rifle is equipped with a period-correct Weatherby variable optic mounted via a Buehler rail system, complementing the rifle’s intended use as a precision sporting arm. The combination of magnum chambering, robust Mark V action, and factory scope package captures the Weatherby ethos of speed, power, and accuracy.

This example remains in Fine overall condition, retaining a high percentage of its original metal finish with only light wear consistent with careful use. The bore is bright with strong rifling and only a minor isolated spot of corrosion noted near the muzzle. The skip-line checkered walnut stock presents very well, showing only minor finish chips and light handling marks while retaining crisp lines and classic Weatherby styling. With its desirable German manufacture, strong condition, and complete scoped configuration, this Mark V stands as a well-preserved example of Weatherby’s golden era of sporting rifle production.
