The right side of the barrel is marked with a series of proof marks. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number, and “Remington / MODEL 722”.

Barrel Length: 24″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramp, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight has been removed, and the dovetail filled. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Weaver K3 scope, with a German Post reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows moderate wear, with scattered scratches, dings, and thinning of the blued finish throughout. Overall, the scope rates in Good condition. The scope is mounted to a two-piece Weaver base, and sits in 1″ rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a checkered walnut Remington 700 BDL Deluxe stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted monte carlo comb with cheekpiece, checkered plastic Remington buttplate, a capped forend, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock shows moderate wear, with a few light scratches and dings scattered throughout. There is a crack in the stock just behind the bolt handle, below the safety. The crack appears to have been repaired.. The stock’s gloss finish is intact throughout. The checkering is well defined. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. Overall, the stock rates in Fair condition. The “Moderate” wear and “Fair” grade is due to the crack.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its current metal refinish. The balance of the finish shows a refinish, as markings appear sanded down, and there is evidence of cold-blue touch-ups. There is light thinning of the finish throughout the barrel, and on the leading edges of the receiver. There is minor freckling of surface corrosion scattered throughout the barrel and receiver as well. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 722 was introduced in the late 1940s as a streamlined, short-action predecessor to the later Model 700, and it quickly earned a reputation for accuracy and mechanical simplicity. By 1953, the 722 had become a respected sporting rifle built in Ilion, New York, and remains Curio and Relic eligible today. Its compact receiver and robust bolt design laid much of the groundwork for Remington’s later bolt-action success, making the 722 an important step in the company’s mid-century development.

Chambered in .257 Roberts, this rifle reflects a cartridge introduced in the 1930s that became well regarded for its mild recoil and efficient performance on medium game. The .257 Roberts has long been appreciated for its flat trajectory and balanced bullet weights, making it a traditional favorite among hunters seeking versatility without excessive recoil. The 24 inch barrel supports the cartridge’s ballistic potential, while the period Weaver K3 scope with German Post reticle complements the rifle’s mid-20th century sporting character.

This example presents in good overall condition, showing evidence of refinishing and honest use over time. The bore remains bright with strong rifling, and the action functions correctly. The replacement Remington 700 BDL Deluxe stock has been fitted and remains structurally sound despite a repaired crack behind the bolt handle area. Overall, this custom-configured Remington 722 stands as a C&R-eligible mid-century sporting rifle chambered in a classic American hunting cartridge, reflecting both its era of manufacture and later modifications.
