Our Assessment: This Heckler & Koch HK91 represents one of the most iconic Cold War–era battle rifles ever offered to the U.S. civilian market, imported from Germany during a brief window before changing regulations curtailed availability. Manufactured in 1981, as indicated by the IB date code, the HK91 is the semi-automatic civilian counterpart to the legendary G3 service rifle, sharing the same roller-delayed blowback operating system that defined Heckler & Koch’s postwar rifle lineage. Built in Oberndorf and proofed at Ulm, these rifles exemplify German industrial precision, with robust stamped construction, welded trunnion, and a chrome-lined barrel designed for durability under sustained use. Chambered in .308 Winchester/7.62x51mm NATO, the HK91 reflects NATO standardization at the height of the Cold War, pairing a powerful full-size rifle cartridge with a recoil-mitigating roller system that delivers smooth, consistent operation. This example remains in exceptional condition, retaining approximately 99 percent of its original HK gray enamel finish with only light operational wear and faint handling marks visible. The chrome-lined bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9.5 out of 10, with only stubborn fouling present. The polymer furniture set remains clean and intact, with no cracks or chips, and the diopter rear sight assembly is complete and fully functional, preserving the rifle’s correct military sighting system.

This offering is further enhanced by an extensive accessory package, including ten magazines consisting of German aluminum and steel examples along with CETME magazines, as well as a correct G3 bayonet dated 1978 and an HK cotton three-point sling. The rifle is fitted with a rubber casing deflector and does not have a bayonet mounting point installed on the cocking tube, a common configuration on imported civilian HK91 rifles. With its strong finish, excellent bore, matching period components, and desirable accessories, this HK91 stands as a premium example of one of the most sought-after German battle rifles ever imported into the United States. -R.E.
