Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.  In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: It is likely that this Colt Python was shipped to Germany for the engraving (possibly to a U.S. Service member that was stationed there.)  This revolver retains about 98% of its refinish. There are minimal scratches or handling marks, mostly on the top strap. There is no turn line on the cylinder. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The lock-up on this revolver is solid, with no play when the trigger is depressed. The action functions correctly. We have not fired this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Black plastic case.

Our Assessment: The Colt Python has long occupied a singular position in American revolver history, representing the highest level of hand fitted double action craftsmanship ever offered by Colt. Introduced in 1955 as the company’s flagship .357 Magnum, the Python was never intended to be a mass production revolver. Each example was extensively hand polished, carefully timed, and tuned to deliver an exceptionally smooth double action pull and a crisp single action break. By 1976, when this revolver was manufactured, the Python had already cemented its reputation as the benchmark against which all other double action revolvers were judged.

This example retains the classic 6 inch vent rib configuration that defines the Python’s balance and accuracy, but it is further distinguished by extensive aftermarket engraving executed in the German tradition. The presence of German proof marks and a 1977 date stamp strongly suggest the revolver was shipped overseas, likely to a U.S. service member stationed in Germany, where it received its embellishment. German engraving of this period is known for deep relief scrollwork, dense coverage, and bold use of precious metal accents, all of which are present here. The barrel, frame, cylinder, and top strap are fully engraved, accented by gold inlays including a gold Python motif on the left side of the barrel and a gold eagle on the right, transforming the revolver into a true presentation grade piece while preserving the underlying Colt form.

The revolver has been refinished at the time of engraving and remains in exceptional condition, retaining approximately 98 percent of its refinish with only minimal handling marks and no visible cylinder turn line. The bore is pristine with sharp rifling and no erosion, and the checkered wood grips with gold Colt medallions remain unmarked. Mechanically, the revolver exhibits the tight lockup, precise timing, and smooth action expected of a Python. While the engraving and refinish place it outside the realm of factory original collector examples, they firmly establish it as a custom engraved Colt built on one of the finest double action revolver platforms ever produced. This revolver offers a compelling blend of Colt mechanical excellence and high grade German ornamental craftsmanship.
