Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V Varmintmaster represents a formative chapter in Roy Weatherby’s rise as a premier name in high-velocity sporting rifles. During the 1960s and early 1970s, Weatherby partnered with J.P. Sauer & Sohn in West Germany to produce Mark V rifles to exacting standards, combining the strength of the Mark V action with European machining and finishing. These West German–made rifles are widely regarded as some of the finest early Mark V examples, produced before Weatherby transitioned manufacturing to other locations. The Varmintmaster variant was purpose-built for precision shooting, emphasizing accuracy, barrel length, and optic use rather than iron sights.
Chambered in .224 Weatherby Magnum, this rifle reflects Roy Weatherby’s relentless pursuit of speed and flat trajectory. Introduced in the early 1960s, the .224 Magnum was designed to deliver exceptional velocity and long-range varmint performance, placing it at the cutting edge of small-caliber centerfire cartridges of its day. The 24-inch barrel and absence of iron sights underscore the rifle’s intended role as a scoped precision instrument, and the included Weatherby Imperial scope complements the rifle’s original concept as a complete long-range package. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, with only stubborn fouling noted, indicating strong underlying barrel condition.
Condition throughout is very strong. The rifle retains approximately 90 percent of its original metal finish with only minor handling marks, while the stock presents in very good condition with high-gloss skip-line checkering, contrasting wood tones, and classic Weatherby styling details intact. The smooth action, crisp markings, and overall fit and finish reflect the quality for which West German Mark V rifles are known. Taken as a whole, this Weatherby Mark V Varmintmaster stands as a highly desirable C&R-eligible example of early Weatherby production, blending European craftsmanship with Roy Weatherby’s distinctive high-velocity philosophy.
