Our Assessment: The Colt Python has long been regarded as the pinnacle of American double action revolver craftsmanship. Introduced in 1955 as Colt’s flagship revolver, the Python was conceived not as a duty gun, but as a premium, hand fitted target and sporting revolver built to the highest standards Colt could achieve. Each Python was assembled and tuned by skilled craftsmen, with extensive hand polishing, precise timing, and an action renowned for its smooth double action pull and crisp single action break. The ventilated rib, full underlug, and elegant proportions quickly established the Python as the benchmark by which all other double action revolvers were judged.

This 1978 manufactured example represents the mature production era of the Python, finished in factory nickel and configured with the highly desirable 4 inch barrel. The nickel finish remains strong, retaining approximately 95 percent coverage with only light handling marks, a thin cylinder turn line, and minor carbon rings on the cylinder face consistent with careful use. The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, indicating excellent internal condition. The original checkered wood grips with gold Colt medallions show honest wear, including small chips and worn checkering, consistent with age rather than abuse.

Mechanically, the revolver presents exactly as expected of a Python, with solid lockup, correct timing, and smooth operation. The wide target hammer and serrated trigger further reinforce its sporting orientation. Overall, this revolver stands as a well preserved example of Colt’s most celebrated double action design from the late 1970s, combining classic Python aesthetics, strong remaining finish, and excellent mechanical integrity. It remains a highly desirable representation of Colt’s golden era of revolver production. Please see our high quality photos for a better understanding of condition and good luck on your bids!!!
