Markings: The top of the receiver is marked, “U.S. / MODEL OF 1917 / EDDYSTONE / 662385”. The right side of the stock is marked in white “11”. The left side of the receiver has the Ordnance Corps “Flaming Bomb”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post with two protective wings. The rear sight is a Pattern 1917 sight set between two large protective wings. When flipped up it becomes a sight ladder that uses a sliding aperture.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece laminate wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, finger grooves, barrel band with sling loop, through bolt, sling loop, and a steel buttplate with a hinged door for storage. The stocks show handling wear throughout. There are scratches and light compression marks throughout. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13.5” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is distinct. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 8.5 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling and storage wear. There are light scratches throughout. There is light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear, though some of the smaller proof and acceptance marks are worn around their edges. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Adopted as America entered the First World War, the U.S. Model of 1917 rifle became the primary infantry arm of the American Expeditionary Forces. Built on the strong and reliable Pattern 1914 Enfield action, the design offered a generous sight radius, a protected aperture rear sight, and rugged battlefield durability. This 1918 Eddystone example represents the largest portion of wartime production, as the Eddystone plant turned out rifles at unmatched speed to meet the urgent demands of mobilization. The markings remain clear under the refinish, and the laminated stock—a later arsenal replacement—illustrates how these rifles continued in use long after the Armistice.
Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the M1917 served decades beyond WWI in training, guard, and reserve roles, valued for its accuracy and strength. This rifle’s bore remains bright with strong rifling, a noteworthy feature on a service rifle of this age. The metal retains a high-coverage parkerized refinish with only light handling marks, while the stock shows the honest wear expected from long storage and use. As one of the rifles that armed the majority of U.S. troops in WWI, the M1917 holds an important place in American military history, and examples like this one offer a tangible connection to the industrial and logistical effort that shaped the modern U.S. Army.
