Our Assessment:

This Remington Model 8 dates to 1907 and represents one of the most important milestones in early twentieth-century sporting rifle development. Designed by John M. Browning and manufactured by Remington Arms Company, the Model 8 was among the first commercially successful semi-automatic sporting rifles offered to the American market. Its distinctive long-recoil operating system, enclosed barrel jacket, and fixed magazine set it apart from contemporary manually operated rifles, signaling a major shift in how hunters and outdoorsmen approached repeating firepower in the field.

Chambered in .35 Remington, this rifle is paired with one of the most effective early smokeless sporting cartridges developed specifically for semi-automatic use. Introduced alongside the Model 8, the .35 Remington earned a reputation for excellent terminal performance on deer-sized game and remains respected for its balance of penetration and moderate recoil. The 22-inch barrel retains a semi-bright bore with distinct rifling, showing light erosion and light pitting primarily in the grooves, and in this writer’s opinion rates 7 out of 10. The sighting arrangement includes a Marble No. 5 front blade and a folding rear u/v notch with white diamond reference, supplemented by a vintage Marble receiver sight that reflects common period upgrades for improved accuracy.

Overall condition reflects honest use consistent with a working sporting rifle of its era. Approximately 25 percent of the original blued finish remains, with the barrel now worn to a gray patina and the receiver showing notable handling wear and light corrosion, particularly along the lower surfaces. The walnut stocks exhibit handling marks, compression dents, oil darkening at the wrist, and a small chip near the buttplate, but remain structurally sound and appropriate for a C&R example. Markings remain visible, screw heads are serviceable, and the long-recoil action functions correctly. This rifle stands as a solid, historically significant example of the Remington Model 8, embodying the transition from traditional sporting arms to the modern semi-automatic rifle. MF
