Markings: The top of the receiver is marked, “U.S. / MODEL OF 1917 / EDDYSTONE / 550379”. The bolt handle is marked with an Ordnance Corps “Flaming Bomb”. The stock is marked, “S-S.A.A.” (San Antonio Arsenal). The top of the barrel is marked, “W / 4-18” and with an Ordnance Corps “Flaming Bomb”. The left side of the receiver has the Ordnance Corps “Flaming Bomb”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post with two protective wings. The rear sight is a Pattern 1917 sight set between two large protective wings. When flipped up it becomes a sight ladder that uses a sliding aperture.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, finger grooves, barrel band with sling loop, through bolt, sling loop, and a steel buttplate with a hinged door for storage. The stocks show handling wear throughout. There are scratches and deep compression marks throughout. The upper handguard left side of the lower both have chips. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 13.25” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is distinct. There is light to moderate erosion in the bore. There is light pitting in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 5.5 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and light oxidization throughout. The receiver has intermittent oxidization throughout.There is a light patina throughout. There is light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tooled with serviceable slots. The markings are clear, though some of the smaller proof and acceptance marks are worn around their edges. Overall, this rifle rates a Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Adopted in 1917 to overcome critical shortages of M1903 rifles, the U.S. Model of 1917 quickly became the dominant American service rifle of the First World War. Built on the robust Pattern 1914 Enfield design, the M1917 offered exceptional strength, a long sight radius, and a receiver aperture sight system well suited to field conditions. This Eddystone-produced example, dated 1918, reflects the industrial surge that carried American forces through the final campaigns in France. Its barrel and receiver markings remain clear, and the San Antonio Arsenal stock stamp indicates later government service or refurbishment, a common postwar pathway for these rifles as they were maintained in reserve.
Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the rifle continued in training and guard roles for decades due to its accuracy and ruggedness. The bore on this example shows wear consistent with both age and use, yet retains defined rifling, and the exterior metal preserves most of its parkerized finish with only scattered oxidation. The stock bears the honest handling impressions expected of a military rifle that remained in service across eras. The M1917 remains an important U.S. infantry arm—fielded in greater numbers than the M1903 during WWI—and rifles such as this one provide a direct link to America’s rapid wartime mobilization and its industrial ability to arm an army almost overnight.
