Our Assessment: This Savage Model 99EG from 1954 represents one of the most respected American sporting rifles of the 20th century, produced during the mature postwar period of Savage’s Chicopee Falls operations. The Model 99 stood apart from other lever actions through its hammerless design, solid receiver, and internal rotary magazine, allowing the safe use of pointed bullets and giving it a distinctly modern edge over tubular-fed contemporaries. The EG variant, with its longer barrel and refined stock profile, was well regarded as a balanced, accurate hunting rifle rather than a purely utilitarian woods gun.
Chambered in .250-3000 Savage, this rifle is closely tied to the cartridge’s historic legacy as the first commercial sporting round to achieve 3,000 feet per second. Introduced in 1915, the .250 Savage earned a reputation for mild recoil, flat trajectory, and exceptional effectiveness on deer-sized game, making it a favorite among discerning hunters who valued precision over raw power. The bright bore with sharp rifling and absence of erosion support that reputation, while the retained factory barrel markings and proof stamps reinforce the rifle’s originality. The receiver-mounted Bushnell 2.5x scope reflects a common mid-century hunting configuration, even as the rifle retains provisions for a tang sight.
Overall, this example presents in very good condition, retaining approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish with only light corrosion spotting and handling marks consistent with careful field use. The walnut stocks remain attractive and sound, with crisp lines, intact checkering, and only minor wear, while the lever still shows clear case coloring. Mechanically correct and visually representative of Savage’s golden-era sporting arms, this Model 99EG stands as a fine example of Savage Arms Corporation’s most iconic lever-action design, paired with one of the most influential hunting cartridges ever developed.
